In Jewish culture 'to have a meal' or 'eat bread' is a symbol of fellowship, of shalom or peace. So When David says, "You prepare a table before mine enemies" (Ps 23.5) it meant "though surrounded by foes, the Lord his Shepherd was preparing a meal so that he (David) could have fellowship with God."
For the Jews, the word 'Banquet' is a symbol of Salvation. However they believed that Salvation was their exclusive birthright. To read more click here
